Now the next generation can do a LOT more, so it should be far less common this time around. last generation they had an excuse to do this since the consoles were genuinely very weak. So a very cheap way to render the game faster, is simply to render it at a lower resolution. Now generating an image is INSANELY hard to do for a video games frame, and it only gets exponentially worse as you try to go up in resolution. So if we look at that ratio we can get the actual resolution. This is because most TVs either run 720p, or 1080p(both of which are 16:9). This ratio is what most games will be doing, because most TVs run at this ratio. The aspect ratio means the ratio between the number of vertical pixels, and the number of horizontal pixels. So these resolutions tend to come in a specific aspect ratio. Don't believe me? Check out this picture, and go ahead and guess which column is 1080p. ![]() Just know that it is different than 1080i which uses interlace scan(hence the "i"), and that you would much rather prefer progressive scanning. What is progressive scanning? Don't worry about it. That number means the number of vertical pixels, that progressively scan. So you see 480p, 720p, and 1080p, and many others.
